What Is Handfasting?
Handfasting is an ancient tradition... a symbolic binding of two lives, hearts and spirits. Often called the "original wedding ceremony," it dates back to Celtic, Pagan and Norse customs, where couples would have their hands gently bound together with ribbon, cord or cloth to mark their union.
Today, handfasting is a beautiful way to honour love, spiritual, romantic, or symbolic, through a deeply personal and meaningful ritual.
Whether as a stand-alone ceremony or part of a wedding, vow renewal or commitment celebration, handfasting speaks to the soul in a way that words alone often cannot.
Why Choose Handfasting?
In a world where love comes in many forms, handfasting invites you to celebrate your connection in a way that feels authentic, soulful and timeless.
Deeply Personal - Each ceremony is crafted to reflect your unique journey, beliefs, and bond.
Symbolic and Sacred - The binding of hands represents unity, trust and the weaving together of two lives.
Spiritual, Not Religious - Perfect for couples looking for a soulful, nature-based ritual outside of formal religious frameworks.
Inclusive and Embracing - Handfasting is for everyone, all relationships, all love.

A Typical Ceremony May Include
A heartfelt welcome and grounding
Words of intention or a blessing
Exchanging of Rings if you wish
The binding of hands with cord or ribbon
Personal vows or shared promises
Optional Elements, such as sacred drumming, sacred smudge, chakapa rattle, blanket ritual, jumping the broom, candle lighting, blessings, music or readings
You’re welcome to include meaningful objects, family members or cultural traditions, this is your story, told your way.
Who Is It for?
Couples getting married or renewing vows
Partners marking a spiritual commitment
Individuals celebrating unity within themselves
Families or friendships creating lasting bonds
A Note About Legal Marriage
My Sacred Union ceremonies are ceremonial and symbolic rather than legal. They are a heartfelt celebration of your partnership but they do not create a legally binding marriage.
If you would like to be legally married, you will need to complete the legal paperwork separately at your local registry office. Many couples choose to do this either before or after the ceremony and I am very happy to support you in weaving both moments into your journey in a way that feels meaningful and right for you.

The Binding Cords
The cords used in handfasting can be symbolic and beautiful.
You might choose colours that hold meaning, fabrics that connect to your heritage or even braid them yourself with intention and love.
I can guide you in choosing or creating your cords as part of the preparation process.

Handfasting rituals can be held:

Ceremony & Ritual for the Scattering of Ashes
A Thoughtful Way to Say Goodbye

Scattering a loved one’s ashes can be a profoundly moving and meaningful moment, a chance to say goodbye in a way that feels personal, natural and full of love.
While this ceremony is non-religious, it is deeply respectful. It honours the life, memories, and presence of the one who has passed, while offering space for reflection, release and peace.
What is an Ash Scattering Ceremony?
This ceremony is a gentle ritual where family and friends gather to return the ashes of a loved one to a meaningful place - the sea, a forest, a hillside, a garden. It is a simple but powerful act of release, guided by words, silence, memory and intention.
The ceremony might include
A few words of welcome and intention
Time to reflect and remember, with readings, music, or silence
Personal stories or messages shared aloud
A moment of stillness before the scattering
The scattering of the ashes, either by one person or shared among those present
A closing gesture, such as casting petals, lighting a candle, or simply holding hands in silence
Each ceremony is created with care to reflect the wishes of the family and the spirit of the person being remembered. It can be as simple or as detailed as you wish.
Why Have a Ceremony?
Grief needs space. Ritual helps give shape to the unspeakable, a way to honour a life, to say goodbye, and to begin letting go.
This ceremony is not about religion, but about meaning:
It offers a quiet, human moment to reflect and remember
It marks the transition from presence to memory
It allows family and friends to come together, in nature, with love
It becomes a lasting memory in its own right, a peaceful farewell
Your Ceremony, Your Way
There is no right way to scatter ashes. I work with you to create a ceremony that feels right - intimate, warm and true to the person you’re remembering.
Whether you wish to include poetry, music, moments of silence or simple spoken words, the ceremony will honour your loved one with grace and care.

Each ceremony I create is personal, heartfelt and crafted with great care to honour your loved one or your partnership in a meaningful and authentic way.

Much of my work happens behind the scenes in the care, time and emotional presence dedicated to writing, preparing and holding your story with respect.
This ensures that your ceremony is unique, thoughtful and deeply rooted in your values.
